AREA INFORMATION

Located in Brooks County, Georgia; Quitman is called the “Camellia City” and serves as the county seat. State Highway 333 and U.S. Highway 84 make regional travel convenient as do I-10 and I-75, which are both easily accessible. Quitman is approximately 17 miles west of Valdosta, GA, near the Florida state line.

HISTORY

Brooks County was founded in 1858 and created from portions of Lowndes and Thomas Counties. Quitman, the largest town in the county, was founded as the county seat of the newly formed Brooks County in 1858. The community was named in honor of John A. Quitman, incorporated as a town in 1859 and became a city in 1904.


AMENITIES

Brooks County High School, Brooks County Middle School and Quitman Elementary School provide K-12 students educational opportunities for Quitman students. Valdosta Technical College and Valdosta State University are nearby colleges offer higher education.

Farming and automotive are the prevalent industries in the Quitman area. The Brooks County Industrial Park covers 250 acres with room for expansion. It’s located just one mile south of Quitman.

Brooks County Hospital provides exceptional healthcare with services including cardiovascular, dialysis, emergency, laboratory and rehabilitation services to name a few.

CLIMATE

The climate is characterized as humid subtropical with January high temperatures reaching the 60s and July highs averaging 92 degrees. Average annual precipitation is 53 inches.

RECREATION

Wild Adventures Theme Park, Pinewoods Bird Festival, Plantation Ball, Brooks County Skillet Festival and Festival of Lights Christmas Parade are among the numerous events and attractions in the Quitman area. Places of interest include Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum, Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, McKey Park, Ola Barber Pittman House, Remerton Mill Village, Theatre Guild Valdosta, Brooks County Museum and Cultural Center and South Georgia Motorsports Park.


Barretts Pond is known for its annual summer fishing derby, while the county features many lakes and streams and is also known as a hunter's paradise. The Northlake Golf and Country Club in nearby Valdosta, Quiet Pines Golf Course and Stone Creek Golf Club offer challenges to golfers of various skill levels.
